Another stele stands out for its originality. It shows a rather rare example of a child accompanied by a female figure, most probably his mother (Fig. 144). The top of the stele is broken but the start of its curving edge is still visible on the left. The female figure is dressed in a long garment covering her head and tightened at the waist, in the same way as female figures represented at Carchemish. Her feet wear shoes with upturned toes. She stretches her arms over the child, possibly in a gesture of supplication, or she is holding an object that is no longer identifiable. The child, dressed in a similar garment but without head cover, is also wearing shoes with upturned toes. His left arm is bent either to make a greeting gesture or to present an object. The function of this stele is no clearer than that of the previous one. It could be another funerary stele on which a mother would recommend her child to the powers of the Netherworld. It could also be, as F. Thureau-Dangin thought, a scene of consecration, the child being an oblate,45 or else a scene of presentation to the court of a prince, where the child would receive a special education.
